Kukko Kwat

Kukko Kwat is a village of 115 households with a population of 520 located in Mahlaing Township in the Mandalay Division. The villagers do some fishing but mainly farm sesame, beans, corn, cotton and groundnut. The entire village was moved ten years ago because of government dam construction. The government compensated the villagers for land only, not buildings. So the villagers broke down the old school building and rebuilt it in the new village. The school’s old wood structure is now very  damaged and the roof has holes.

To accommodate the  82 students, we built a new 40′ x 30′ primary/middle school and the villagers are salvaging material from the old building to reconstruct a one-room 20′ x 30′ building.
