Own Ton #2
We were delighted when this project came up this year. We built a new 60′ x 30′ middle school in Own Ton in 2018 where the villagers gave us an especially warm welcome. Own Ton is located in the Myingyan District, Mandalay Region about 100 miles to the south-west of Mandalay. It has 523 households with a population of 2,600. The villagers grow sesame, groundnuts, beans and corn and raise livestock including goats, pigs, cows, sheep and chickens.
There are currently 364 students, evenly split between girls and boys, with many in temporary classrooms. Last year, the high school grades began and they will be adding grades 11 and 12 this year. Students from three nearby villages from grade 5 up attend school in Own Ton. The villagers purchased two acres of land for us to build a new 90′ x 30′ high school, a new teachers’ cottage, a water well, a water tower and toilets. This new plot is located 200 feet from the current school location and allows for a large playground area.
